Governor Vetoes Bill

Governor Vetoes Bill

This session, your Legislators and the Governor had the opportunity to give Minnesota children a wonderful gift - non-toxic baby products.  While the legislature rose to the occasion, the the Governor did not. The House and Senate voted by a wide margin to send the Public Health Omnibus Bill to the Governor for his signature. Unfortunately, Governor Pawlenty gave in to industry lobbyists instead of protecting our children and issued a veto.

The bill would have phased out the use of phthalates in products for children three and younger and ended the use of a toxic flame retardant in household products.

Phthalates, a chemical known to be hormone disrupting, is found in many children's products such as rubber duckies, vinyl bibs, and teething rings. Children are particularly vulnerable to toxic chemical exposure and this chemical should not be in children's products.

The health and safely of our children are important to us as child care providers. CCPT and the United Steel Workers Women of Steel will continue working together to stop the import of toxic toys and the use of toxic chemicals in products for children.

Please contact the Governor and tell him how disappointed you are as a child care provider that he wouldn't help make toys and teething rings safer for our kids!

Act Now: Call the Governor at 800-657-3717 and let him know how you feel about his veto.
